The beautiful woodblock print Fujo Ninsō Jippon: Popen wo Fuku Musume (Young Woman Blowing a Popen), from the series Ten Classes of Women’s Physiognomy, is by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806).

A defining characteristic of this celebrated series is its attempt to capture the individuality and inner emotions of women through subtle expressions and gestures. Utamaro employs intimate close-up compositions, focusing on the face and hairstyle to reveal the inner spirit that quietly radiates from within. This particular print portrays the innocent charm of a young woman, elegantly dressed in a beautifully patterned kimono, absorbed in the simple delight of blowing a popen (glass noise maker toy). The scene conveys a sense of gentle playfulness and quiet intimacy.

Originally printed during the Edo period, this is a recarved edition from the late Shōwa era (1980–1990). The publisher is Yuyudo; however, this print is part of Utamaro’s ukiyo-e collection issued as “not for sale.” This woodblock print features high-quality colors and intricate details, enhanced by a shimmering mica background. Please take a moment to appreciate the superb craftsmanship and fine detail.
