The breathtaking woodblock print “Aki – A-UN” (Autumn A-UN) by Kazuyuki Ohtsu captures Shingu Kumano Shrine in Kitakata, renowned for its Nagatoko (worship hall), immersed in radiant autumn light, where golden ginkgo leaves blanket the ground in quiet abundance. At its heart stands a venerable ginkgo tree, centuries old, anchoring the scene with a profound sense of time and stillness. The gentle presence of two birds perched amid a carpet of golden leaves adds a subtle warmth to the composition.

According to Mr. Ohtsu, the primary focus of this work is the pair of komainu—guardian lion-dogs that stand watch at Shinto shrines—embodying the concept of A-Un. This Buddhist notion represents the beginning and end, or the all-encompassing nature of existence. In such pairs, one figure opens its mouth to form the sound “A,” while the other closes its mouth to form “Un,” symbolizing the rhythm of breath—inhalation and exhalation—and, more broadly, the cycle of life and the universe.

This superb print is issued in a limited edition of only 60 impressions.
