- Splash, 1985 -

The marvelous aquatint etching print 'Splash' is by Sarah Brayer (b. 1957). It depicts the back of a woman floating in steam. In a quiet space, she pours hot water over herself from a basin, and I can almost hear the sound of the water splashing. In Japan, there is a custom of washing the hair and body outside the tub before entering the bath. While Western-style bathing has become more common in recent years, this tradition still persists. 

This is a very large piece, measuring 15 1/8 inches wide by 20 3/8 inches tall (38.5 x 52 cm). Printed in 1985, it is signed, titled, dated, and numbered by the artist in pencil on the bottom margin. This limited edition consists of only 30 sheets. A quiet and elegant work of modern beauty, it also exudes a certain warmth.
