- Spider Lilies -

This charming mini-sized woodblock print was originally created for a calendar published by Chikuho-do. Hand-printed in the traditional Japanese woodblock technique, it makes a wonderful decoration for a small space or a thoughtful gift for someone special.

This delightful print depicts Spider Lilies (Higanbana or Manjushage) in bloom against a bright sky-blue background. These striking flowers bloom in abundance across the Japanese countryside as the weather begins to cool, typically around the autumn equinox in September. Since childhood, they have been one of the seasonal flowers most familiar to me.

In Japan, the flower is also known as Manjushage, a name derived from Sanskrit that refers to a heavenly flower. According to Buddhist tradition, crimson blossoms are said to fall from the heavens as an auspicious sign. Because Spider Lilies often bloom around temples and cemeteries, they are also closely associated with Buddhism and the changing of the seasons. I have often admired them blooming beside temple paths in Japan, making this symbolism feel especially meaningful to me.
