- Shobu (Iris) -

The elegant woodblock print Shōbu (Iris) is by Shiun Kondo (dates of birth and death unknown). It depicts a graceful woman dressed in a summer kimono, her expression soft and dreamlike. Blooming pale irises in the background enhance the refined beauty of the composition, creating a quietly atmospheric and visually captivating scene.

Originally published in 1924, this is a later edition issued by Ishū Kankō Kai. The print is beautifully produced on fine Japanese washi paper with the “Sanso” watermark. It was carved by Susumu Ito and printed by Yoshiaki Watanabe, under the supervision of Dr. Muneshige Narasaki. The left margin bears the publisher’s red money seal, along with the supervisor's name, the printer’s and engraver’s names.

Shiun Kondo was a Japanese painter active during the Taishō period. He is known for his woodblock print illustrations for the literary magazine Bungei Club and for works depicting the Great Kantō Earthquake. In 1924, he collaborated with Terukata Ikeda and others on the series New Ukiyo-e Beauties.
