- Shimada no Onna (Shimada Woman) -

The elegant black-and-white woodblock print Shimada no Onna, Miyata Masayuki Sakuhin-shū yori (Shimada Woman, from the Collection of Works by Masayuki Miyata) by Masayuki Miyata depicts a woman with a traditional Shimada hairstyle, set against a rhythmic lattice pattern. The Shimada is a traditional Japanese women’s coiffure associated with classical and historical settings. The kimono’s stylized floral motif and the dramatic contrast of black and white give the composition a sense of quiet elegance and modern clarity.

A pencil inscription along the bottom margin identifies the artist and title, gives the date as 1981, and credits Yasuo Matsunaga as the carver and printer.

Masayuki Miyata (1926–1997) was a Japanese kiri-e (paper-cutting) artist. He began his career as an illustrator for modern publications of Japanese classical literature and later became known for his kiri-e works, including woodblock and silkscreen prints.
