The lovely small-format woodblock print “Shaga - Satsuki” (Fringed Iris – May), from the series Twelve Aspects of Flowers, is by Tomikichiro Tokuriki. Printed in 1978, the composition features the Japanese title in the upper left, while the artist’s signature and red seal, both reading “Tomi,” appear in the lower left.
This charming print depicts delicate fringed irises set against a luminous yellow background. In Japan, shaga is often found growing in clusters in moist woodlands, along shaded slopes, and beside embankments near human settlements, blooming from April through May. Its graceful, overlapping petals resemble the wings of a butterfly, giving rise to the poetic nickname “butterfly flower.” With its gentle colors and elegant design, this delightful print beautifully captures the quiet beauty of spring.
