The black and white woodblock print "Seki no Gohonmatsu" (Five Pine Trees of the Inlet) is by renowned artist Unichi Hiratsuka (1895–1997). It depicts a serene seascape with towering pine trees atop a mountain—an iconic landscape once beloved by the local community.
The “Five Pine Trees of the Inlet” refers to five majestic black pines that once stood in Mihonoseki-cho, Matsue City, in Shimane Prefecture. These trees lined a mountain near the port of Mihonoseki and served as important landmarks for boatmen and fishermen navigating to and from the port or traveling to the Oki Islands. One of the trees was cut down by order of a feudal lord, and while four remained for a time, all have since withered and disappeared.
A traditional song about the Five Pine Trees remains well-known and continues to be fondly sung to this day.
The print is block-signed “UN” in the lower left corner of the image, and hand-signed, titled, and dated in pencil along the bottom margin.
