- Sake Tsukuru Ie (The Sake-Brewing House) -

The striking woodblock print “Sake Tsukuru Ie” (The Sake-Brewing House) is by Taizō Minagawa (1917–2005). Characteristic of Minagawa’s background as a dyeing artist, the work features rich colors and a bold, decorative design. This print depicts a sake-brewing house in Fushimi, Kyoto. Set at night during the sake-brewing season, the scene is made especially captivating by the sight of numerous large sake barrels lined up in front of the brewery. The gold metallic moon and blue metallic water create a beautiful contrast, adding both visual richness and a refined modern atmosphere to the composition.

Fushimi is renowned as a historic sake-brewing district. Although its nostalgic streetscapes, lined with traditional sake breweries, are gradually disappearing amid modernization, they continue to possess a distinctive charm and visual appeal.

The left margin bears the Japanese title “Sake Tsukuru Ie,” along with the inscription “Minagawa Taizō saku” (created by Minagawa Taizō), the publisher Unsōdō, the carver Monju, and the printer Takenaka. The publisher’s watermark appears in the upper left margin.
