The remarkable woodblock print “Nanban-sen” (Nanban Ship) is by Sumio Kawakami (1895–1972). This large-format print is a later impression from the original blocks carved in 1939, printed with a single black block and then hand-colored. The image is exotic and visually striking, with rich, well-balanced colors.
Kawakami used the term “Nanban” broadly, applying it to ships from various countries, including the Netherlands, rather than limiting it to Portugal and Spain.
