The serene woodblock print 'Muroto Misaki no Ame' (Cape Muroto in Rain) by Hideo Nishiyama (1911–1989) beautifully captures the impressive beauty of the Muroto Misaki area. Renowned for its unique landscape shaped by volcanic activity, wind, and sea, the scene is further enhanced by the rain and a passing ship, which together add a tranquil mood to the seascape, making it a truly serene piece.
Artist's signature, 'Hideo,' with a red seal in the upper right corner of the image. Printer's name: Shinmi; carver's name: Nagashima; and the Unsodo old publisher seal are on the right margin. The Japanese title and the date 'Showa 22 nen 2 gatsu saku' (February in 1947) are on the left margin. These old original first-edition prints are hard to find nowadays.
Hideo Nishiyama (1911–1989) was born in Kyoto and is a well-known Nihon-ga (Japanese painting) artist in Japan.
Cape Muroto, located in Kochi prefecture, is a UNESCO Global Geopark known for its unique landscape shaped by volcanic activity, wind, and sea.
