This exquisite woodblock print, “Maiko” (Apprentice Geisha), from the celebrated series Zoku Showa Shokugyō E-zukushi (Continuing Depictions of Occupations in the Showa Era), was created by Sanzō Wada (1883–1967).

Maiko are apprentice geisha — young women devoted to mastering the traditional arts of Kyoto’s geisha districts, where they entertain through dance, song, shamisen performance, and refined cultural accomplishments. In this composition, young maiko practice their dance steps in preparation for their future roles. As they await their turn, they gather quietly around a brazier, warming themselves in a moment of gentle pause.

Wada captures not only the discipline and quiet tension inherent in their rigorous training, but also the freshness, grace, and luminous vitality of youth. The atmosphere is intimate and contemplative, revealing both dedication and innocence within a single frame.

The series title “Showa Shokugyō E-zukushi” appears in the left margin, accompanied by the date “Showa 30 nen 2 gatsu” (February 1955), the publisher “Kyoto Hanga-in,” the carver “Kikuta,” and the printer “Ohno.” The subtitle “Maiko” is positioned in the upper left corner of the image, while the artist’s hand signature and red seal are placed in the lower left. The print is accompanied by a delicate washi paper cover bearing a description of the work in both English and Japanese.

This print was part of the publisher’s archive. It does not have a limited edition number, but has been carefully preserved by the publisher since 1955 and remains in very good condition.

Sanzō Wada was a painter, printmaker, and leading color theorist who studied under Seiki Kuroda. His work spans painting, printmaking, and design, including his Academy Award–winning costume and color design for the film Gate of Hell (1953).
