"Kyoto Folklore Toy – Paper Masks of the Ox Festival from Uzumasa" by Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902–2000) is a charming small woodblock print, full of vibrant color and traditional character. It depicts two paper masks: one of Madarajin, and the other a red demon mask from the Ox Festival in Uzumasa, Kyoto.

Every late autumn, the unique Ox Festival is held at Koryuji Temple in Uzumasa, Kyoto, to pray for protection from epidemics and for a bountiful harvest. During the ritual, a monk wearing a white paper mask of Madarajin rides a cow, accompanied by the Four Heavenly Kings in red demon masks, and recites a lengthy prayer in front of Yakushido Hall.

Tokuriki’s signature, “To,” is subtly incorporated into the image. The print is beautifully preserved and mounted on its original presentation paper—a wonderful collectible for admirers of Japanese culture and folk art.
