"Kyoto Folklore Toy – Fushimi Doll (Horse) from Fushimi" by Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902–2000) is a delightful small woodblock print, bursting with vibrant color and traditional charm. It depicts a Fushimi Ningyō (Fushimi doll) in the form of a horse.
Fushimi dolls are traditional clay figures first produced near Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, dating back to the late Momoyama period and the early Edo period. Once widely made, today only a few kilns dedicated to crafting Fushimi dolls remain, making them a cherished part of Kyoto’s cultural heritage.
Tokuriki’s signature, “To,” is subtly incorporated into the image. The print is beautifully preserved and mounted on its original presentation paper—a wonderful collectible for admirers of Japanese culture and folk art.
