“Kyoto Folklore Toy – Figurine Inkstone from Atago” by Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902–2000) is a charming small woodblock print, rich in color and traditional appeal. It depicts the Atago Ningyō Suzuri (Atago figurine inkstone), once sold as souvenirs at teahouses near Kiyotaki, an area celebrated for its autumn beauty.

Named after the nearby Atago Shrine, these inkstones were crafted from local stone (called Saga Inkstone). Artisans shaped the fragments into expressive forms—such as Tenjin (as depicted in this print), cows, sea bream, and princesses—and finished them with vivid coloring, resulting in uniquely varied pieces. Now believed to be no longer produced, Atago Ningyō Suzuri are treasured as rare examples of Kyoto folk art, making this print a wonderful collectible.

Tokuriki’s signature, “To,” appears in the lower left of the image. The print is beautifully preserved and mounted on its original presentation paper—a wonderful collectible for admirers of Japanese culture and folk art.
