The captivating woodblock print “Kyo-Tōshō no Ie” (The House of a Kyoto Master Potter) is by Taizō Minagawa (1917–2005). Characteristic of Minagawa’s background as a dyeing artist, the work features rich colors and a bold, decorative design. This print depicts the home of renowned master potter Kanjirō Kawai (1890–1966) in Kyoto’s Gojo-zaka district, an area long associated with the city’s celebrated ceramic tradition. Kawai was one of the leading figures of Japan’s Mingei (folk craft) movement, and his residence remains an important cultural landmark in Kyoto.
Through this work, Minagawa masterfully captures the timeless character and rustic beauty of a traditional Japanese folk dwelling, a style widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Japan’s vernacular architecture. The composition is both strong and harmonious, with the interior furnishings blending naturally into the architectural setting. At the center of the spacious room, a traditional sunken hearth (irori) is set into the floor. Above it hangs a kettle suspended from an adjustable hook, and one can almost hear the gentle sound of water simmering in the quiet stillness of the house.
Minagawa’s work is truly distinctive, renowned for its dynamic compositions and vivid decorative sensibility. The left margin bears the Japanese title “Kyo-Tōshō no Ie,” along with the inscription “Minagawa Taizō saku” (created by Minagawa Taizō), the publisher Unsōdō, the carver Monju, and the printer Takenaka. The publisher’s watermark appears in the lower right margin.
