The lovely woodblock print 'Kanikakuni' (This and That) is by Katsuyuki Nishijima. It depicts the famous Ochaya 'Tomiyo', a tea house in the northern part of Gion where Geisha or Maiko entertain guests. Kanikakuni is an old word. It used in the famous poem "Kanikakuni Gion wa koishi, neru toki mo makura no shita wo mizu no nagaruru", written by Isamu Yoshii, a famous poet active during the Taisho to Showa periods. Kanikakuni means "this and that" or "anyway." The poem translates as, "This and that, I miss Gion so much; even when I sleep, water flows right under my pillow." This famous poem is inscribed on the Kanikakuni monument along the Shirakawa River in Gion. Please note, this is a small print (6 inches x 8 inches) that encapsulates the charm of Gion.
