- Kameido Tenjin, Taiko-bashi (Kameido Tenjin Shrine, Taiko Bridge) -

The peaceful woodblock print “Kameido Tenjin, Taiko-bashi” (Kameido Tenjin Shrine, Taiko Bridge) is by Shirō Kasamatsu (1898–1991). This print prominently features the iconic drum-shaped bridge in Kameido, Tokyo. Two women in kimono stand on the bridge, looking at the night view together. The water reflects the bridge, a crescent moon, willow branches, and softly illuminated houses, creating an evocative scene of a tranquil evening.

The Japanese title, publisher’s name Unsodo, printer’s name Shinmi, carver’s name Nagashima, and the date Showa 30 nen (1955) appear in the left margin. The artist’s signature “Shiro” and his red seal are located in the lower left of the image.

The red arched drum-shaped bridge at Kameido Tenjin Shrine has been cherished as a scenic spot since the Edo period and has been depicted in ukiyo-e prints by artists such as Katsushika Hokusai. Its beauty also appears in Utagawa Hiroshige’s One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. Kasamatsu’s interpretation beautifully captures the quiet elegance and poetic atmosphere of the site, making this first-edition print both rare and highly collectible.
