The remarkable woodblock print “Hirosawa no Tsuki” (The Moon over Hirosawa Pond, Kyoto) is by Taizo Minagawa (1917–2005). Reflecting Minagawa’s background as a textile dyeing artist, the work is distinguished by its rich colors and bold decorative design, beautifully capturing the serene nighttime atmosphere of Hirosawa Pond, where a vast moon rises beside the dark silhouette of the mountains.
Hirosawa Pond has long been celebrated as one of Kyoto’s renowned moon-viewing sites. Since the Heian period, its tranquil waters and moonlit scenery have been praised in classical poetry, admired for their quiet elegance and refined beauty.
Minagawa’s work is truly distinctive, with dynamic compositions and a vivid decorative sensibility that is especially captivating. The left margin includes the Japanese title “Hirosawa no Tsuki,” along with the artist’s name “Minagawa Taizo saku,” the publisher Unsodo, the carver Monju, and the printer Takenaka. The publisher's watermark appear in the upper left margin.
