In Japan, ornamental cabbage has long been associated with the New Year, when it is used in decorative displays as a symbol of longevity, resilience, and good fortune. The print is hand-signed, titled, and dated 1934 in pencil along the bottom margin, and bears the artist's carved block signature "UN" in the lower left of the image.
