The black-and-white woodblock print 'Habotan' (Ornamental Cabbage) is by Unichi Hiratsuka (1895–1997). Known for its bold form and resilience, ornamental cabbage endures even the harsh cold of winter. Its strong presence pairs naturally with the expressive power of black-and-white woodblock printing, a medium that captures its distinctive character with clarity and restraint. In Japan, ornamental cabbage has long been used in New Year’s decorations, giving the plant auspicious associations. The print is hand-signed, titled, and dated in pencil along the bottom margin, with the block signature “UN” in the lower left of the image.
