- Gion, Kyoto -

The beautiful woodblock print “Gion” (Gion, Kyoto) by Yuzaburo Kawanishi (1923–2014) captures a serene sunset scene in Kyoto’s famed Gion district. Bathed in the warm glow of dusk, a particularly striking building along Hanamikoji Street—its red-painted exterior long regarded as a symbol of Gion—emerges with remarkable beauty and presence against the evening sky.

Yuzaburo Kawanishi (1923–2014) was born in Kobe as the third son of the renowned printmaker Hide Kawanishi. Under his father’s guidance, he began creating woodblock prints at around eight years of age, later becoming an active member of both the Japan Print Association and the Kokugakai (National Painting Association).

While inheriting the woodblock printing techniques established by his father, Kawanishi developed a highly distinctive artistic voice of his own, particularly noted for his masterful incorporation of sumi (ink) blocks, which lend his works a refined depth and atmospheric richness.
