The beautiful etching print "Giō-ji" (Giō-ji Temple, Kyoto) is by Ryohei Tanaka (1933-2019). Giō-ji is a small temple located in Oku-Saga, deep within Kyoto’s scenic Saga-Arashiyama district. It is renowned for its enchanting moss garden and Japanese maple trees surrounding a modest thatched-roof hermitage. This exquisite print captures the temple's tranquil atmosphere with remarkable precision, from the delicate details of the leaves to the dappled shadows created by sunlight filtering through the dense foliage. The result is a wonderfully quiet and serene image that beautifully evokes the timeless charm of Kyoto.
Ryohei Tanaka was born in 1933 in Takatsuki, Osaka, and began exhibiting his etchings in 1963. He became one of Japan’s most celebrated etching printmakers, admired for his extraordinarily detailed and poetic depictions of rural villages, Kyoto landscapes, and scenes from everyday life. His works are held in the collections of numerous museums in Japan and abroad, including National Museum of Art, Osaka, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, British Museum, and National Museum of Singapore.
His meticulous craftsmanship and deep appreciation for traditional Japanese architecture and landscapes are beautifully reflected in this exceptional work.
