The fantastic large-format silkscreen print "Gemini" (Futagoza) from the Constellation Series is by Hamae Kusakabe (b. 1931). One of the most fascinating aspects of this work is that it is printed on both sides of the sheet. The front presents a whimsical composition inspired by Western imagery, while the reverse features four striking scenes rendered in the style of traditional Japanese ukiyo-e. This inventive combination of Eastern and Western artistic traditions makes the print especially distinctive.
The front presents a whimsical, Western-inspired composition featuring decorative medallions, symbolic motifs, and a colorful central figure. In contrast, the reverse incorporates four stylized ukiyo-e-inspired scenes accented with warm orange tones, creating an intriguing dialogue between contemporary silkscreen techniques and classical Japanese printmaking.
This impression is pencil signed "Hamae Kusakabe," dated 1973, titled "Futagoza" (Gemini), and numbered 39/100 in the lower margin. The edition was limited to only 100 impressions. The original exhibition label remains affixed to the verso and is inscribed in Japanese with the title "Gemini" (Constellation Series) by Hamae Kusakabe (Seiza Series, Futagoza). Please refer to the photographs.
