- Furui Machikado (Old Street Corner - Van Gogh), 1960 -

The rare large-format woodblock print Furui Machikado (Old Street Corner—Van Gogh) is by Gihachiro Okuyama (1907–1981). Based on Vincent van Gogh’s 1882 drawing View of The Hague (Paddemoes), the work presents a quiet streetscape lined with bare trees and modest houses, with a few solitary figures passing through the scene. Rendered in a refined monochrome palette, the composition conveys stillness, introspection, and poetic melancholy. Okuyama’s delicate linear carving and nuanced contrasts transform this everyday urban view into a timeless and contemplative image.

The image is block-signed “WOOD CUT BY G. OKUYAMA” in the lower right corner of the image. The bottom margin includes the original artist’s name “ゴッホ” (Gogh), the Japanese title Furui Machikado (Old Street Corner), Okuyama’s pencil signature, and the date “1960.” The left margin is inscribed “Shōwa 35 nen 6 gatsu 19 nichi” (June 19, 1960) and “Okuyama Gihachiro jizuri” (self-printed by Gihachiro Okuyama).

Okuyama created a remarkable series of woodblock prints interpreting celebrated works by European artists, and this print is one of those works. Prints from this series are highly collectible and increasingly difficult to find.

Signed: Pencil-signed by the artist on the bottom margin, with additional inscriptions in Japanese on the bottom and left margins.
Condition: Overall in very good condition. There are typical minor ink smudges on the margins, A natural paper crease on the top margin (center), and a tiny drying pinhole near the right side of the upper margin edge. Please refer to the photographs for details.
