The breathtaking woodblock print “Fukiura Kaigan Juroku Rakan-iwa” (The Stone Statues of the Sixteen Arhats at Fukiura Coast) is by Tomikichiro Tokuriki. The print beautifully captures the dramatic contrast between the rugged Arhats Rock formations and the deep blue waters of the Sea of Japan beneath a crystal-clear sky. In the distance, several figures appear to be enjoying a day of fishing, adding a quiet sense of life and activity to the scene. One cannot help but imagine how wonderful it would be to fish in such a beautiful setting. The composition conveys a feeling of serenity and openness, and it is easy to picture the artist, with a clear and tranquil mind, sketching this magnificent coastal landscape.

The print is pencil-signed “T. Tokuriki” in the lower margin. The artist’s signature and red seal, both reading “Tomi,” appear along the left side of the image. The left margin includes the Japanese title “Fukiura Kaigan Juroku Rakan-iwa”, while the edition number appears in the lower right corner. The lower right margin also bears the artist’s distinctive “Tomi” watermark.

The Stone Statues of the Sixteen Arhats, located in Yamagata Prefecture, were created between 1864 and 1868 under the direction of Kan'kai, the twenty-first abbot of Kaizen-ji Temple. The statues were carved to honor fishermen who lost their lives at sea and to pray for maritime safety. The site consists of twenty-two rock-carved Buddhist figures, including the Sixteen Arhats, Shakyamuni Buddha, Manjushri, Samantabhadra, and two disciples. As one of the largest groups of coastal rock-carved Buddhist images along the Sea of Japan, it remains an important cultural and historical landmark.
