The remarkable dragon print titled Bonji iri Tatsunoekawa (Dragon Design with Sanskrit Characters) is by Isetatsu. Bonji (Sanskrit characters) are sacred symbols representing deities and Buddhas, each expressed through a single character. Two dynamic dragons and these Sanskrit characters are beautifully integrated into the Seigaiha design, a traditional Japanese pattern of overlapping waves.

The Seigaiha pattern, resembling fan-shaped waves, is traditionally regarded as a symbol of ever-expanding good fortune, adding auspicious meaning to this powerful composition.

This design was originally published by Isetatsu during the Edo to Meiji period; the present example is a later printing. The publisher’s seal, copyright seal, and Japanese title appear in the top margin. The print features beautiful embossing and is a visually striking and energetic work.
