- Dôjima-gawa Kaki-bune (Houseboat on the Dôjima River) -

The serene woodblock print “Dōjima-gawa Kaki-bune” (Houseboat on the Dōjima River) is by Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902–2000), from the series Osaka Meisho (Famous Places in Osaka). The print beautifully captures a romantic snowy scene of a houseboat floating along the Dōjima River. The term “Kaki-bune” refers to oyster (kaki)-serving houseboats upon the river.

On a snowy night, the warm lights spilling from the Kaki-bune—where people gather to enjoy hot meals and sake—together with the lights from the buildings lining the riverbank, cast a gentle glow that shimmers beautifully across the water. The contrast between the quiet snowfall and the softly illuminated river creates a scene filled with poetic atmosphere and tranquil charm, evoking the peaceful beauty of an Osaka winter evening.

The artist’s signature “Tomi” and the Japanese title “Dōjima-gawa Kaki-bune” appear in the lower left corner of the image. Although this print does not bear a handwritten pencil signature, it was printed during the late Shōwa era while the artist was still alive, and is therefore not a recent posthumous impression.
