Hokusai Katsushika

The beautiful woodblock print "Chie no Umi, Machiami" (Ocean of Wisdom, Net Fishing) is by Hokusai Katsushika (1760-1849). Originally produced in the Edo period, this is a re-carved edition in a smaller format, published by The National Museum in Showa 20 nen (1945). It depicts net fishing, with fishermen using nets and baskets to catch fish in the rapid current. The image is very dynamic and powerful, and the beautifully embossed and delicate details are superb.
