- Chausu-dake (Mt. Chausu in Winter) -

The remarkable large-format woodblock print Chausu-dake (Mt. Chausu-dake) by Kunio Kaneko, created in 1996, depicts the snow-covered mountain beneath a warm, softly colored sky. A small plume of volcanic steam rises just to the left of the summit, subtly suggesting the mountain’s volcanic activity. Snow spreads across the broad volcanic slopes, while the rugged lower terrain is expressed through rich layers of color and texture. A line of bare winter trees stretches across the foreground, adding depth to the composition. Accents of silver leaf are applied here and there, enhancing the beauty of the winter mountains. The work beautifully conveys the stillness of winter and the quiet grandeur of the mountain.
