- Asagao - Nagatsuki (Morning Glory – September) -

The lovely small-format woodblock print “Asagao - Nagatsuki” (Morning Glory – September), from the series Twelve Aspects of Flowers, is by Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902–2000). Printed in 1978, the composition features the Japanese title in the upper left, while the artist’s signature and red seal, both reading “Tomi,” appear in the lower left.

This wonderfully refreshing print features delicate pink morning glory blossoms set against a vivid blue background. A defining characteristic of the morning glory is that it unfurls its blossoms in the early hours of a summer morning, only to wither away before noon. Consequently, in traditional Japanese poetry—such as waka and haiku—and in ukiyo-e woodblock prints, the morning glory has long been depicted as a symbol of transience, fleeting beauty, and the ever-changing nature of love. For the Japanese people, it remains one of the most beloved and familiar flowers of summer.
