The spectacular woodblock print "Hirosaki-jo no Sakura" (Nighttime Cherry Blossoms at Hirosaki Castle) is by Masao Ido. This is an exceptionally large piece, measuring 25 1/8 × 17 5/8 inches (64 × 45 cm), and features a breathtaking night view filled with cherry blossoms. The scene depicts Hirosaki Castle in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture—an area often described as having the most beautiful cherry blossoms in the world.

While the cherry blossoms are stunning during the day, their magical beauty at night is equally captivating. Of the many Ido prints I’ve seen, this one stands out as a true masterpiece—among my top three favorites. It gracefully captures the beauty of Japan, with its iconic cherry blossoms, historic castle, and glowing full moon.

The woodblock was created using a remarkable 48 blocks and 54 separate printings—an incredibly complex and demanding process. It is further embellished with gold and silver leaf, adding elegance and depth to the composition. Please take a moment to appreciate the incredible details throughout. This highly sought-after print is now out of print.
