The small-format woodblock print “Yoshino Bina” (Yoshino Hina Dolls) is by Sumio Kawakami.
Yoshino Hina Dolls are traditional dolls named after the Yoshino region of Nara Prefecture, a celebrated area known for cherry blossom viewing. According to tradition, these dolls originated during the Nara period, when Emperor Tenmu visited his villa in Yoshino. Dolls carved from cherry wood were presented as gifts by powerful local families, and over time the techniques for making them evolved.
Today, only Yoshino Hina Dolls carved from cherry wood and ancient examples dressed in formal attire remain. This woodblock print depicts an ancient Yoshino Hina Doll and conveys a cheerful and charming atmosphere. The artist’s block signature, “Sumi,” appears in the lower right corner of the image.
