The muted lithograph “Harumi Shuhen, Gosui” (Around Harumi, Taking a Nap) is by Takemi Azumaya (b. 1948). Sparse buildings and slender lamppost rise from a stark, open landscape, shaping a scene touched with quiet melancholy. A soft beige-toned expanse envelops the composition, bathing it in stillness and gentle light. The work captures Harumi in Tokyo — a reclaimed land area born from sediment dredged from the seabed — transforming an engineered terrain into a space of modern stillness. Emerging from this hushed landscape, the composition possesses a subtle poetic power. The sheet number, Japanese title, artist’s signature, and date appear along the bottom margin.

Born in Hokkaido in 1948, Takemi Azumaya graduated from the Department of Painting at Tokyo Zokei University in 1971 and completed further studies in printmaking at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1973. He studied under Tetsuro Komai and Tadayoshi Nakabayashi. Awarded the Grand Prix at the 6th Printmaking Grand Prix in 1975, he has since received numerous honors. His works are held in the collections of institutions such as the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; the Tokushima Prefectural Museum of Modern Art; and the Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art. His lithographs are distinguished by a lyrical, literary sensibility and a rhythmic interplay of light and shadow.
