The small woodblock print 'Fuyu no Asama' (Mt. Asama in Winter) is by Unichi Hiratsuka (1895–1997). “Asama” refers primarily to Mount Asama, an active volcano on the border of Nagano and Gunma Prefectures. It is included in both the list of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains and the list of 100 Famous Mountains Known for Their Beautiful Flowers. In this work, however, Hiratsuka presents the trees in their quiet winter state, beyond the flowering season. Rendered in a bold black-and-white palette, the print evokes a sense of calm, minimalist beauty. The artist’s red seal, “Unichi,” appears in the lower right of the image. Hand-signed, titled, and dated in pencil along the bottom margin.
