- Ayame Yukata (Iris Summer Kimono) -

The beautiful woodblock print Ayame Yukata (Iris Summer Kimono) is by Kotondo Torii (1900–1976). It depicts a lovely woman getting ready in a summer kimono adorned with an iris design. Her cheeks and toes are faintly pink, suggesting she has just stepped out of the bath. Featuring exquisite bokashi shading and exceptionally fine carving—especially in the individual strands of hair—this piece is elegantly and meticulously presented. This print is part of the celebrated series Twelve Aspects of Women, originally published in 1932. This impression is a later edition from the Showa era.

This later edition, published by Ishu Kanko Kai, is limited to 100 prints and printed on fine Japanese Washi paper with the “Sanso” watermark. The carver is Shigeru Koike, and the printer is Yoshiaki Watanabe. The print bears Torii’s red seal of approval and the publisher’s red moneybag seal, with the limited edition seal beneath the box.
