- Honegai no hana (Honegai Flower) -

The color mezzotint Honegai no Hana (Honegai Flower) by Nobuo Sato (1926–2005) depicts a delicate flower rising from a honegai, or Venus comb shell. Against the dark oval background, the shell’s fine spines and the softly colored blossom stand out in precise detail. A vivid orange cherry adds a striking accent to the quietly dreamlike composition.

Sato was a Japanese printmaker known for detailed mezzotints that bring a sense of mystery to familiar subjects, including shells and fruit. The Japanese title and the date “‘84” are written in pencil in the lower margin.

Condition: Overall in good condition. There are several very faint foxing spots in the margins. They are not readily noticeable to a casual observer and would be matted out. The image area is in excellent condition. The paper naturally contains tiny bark fibers and other small organic inclusions. The price has been reduced accordingly.
