This print captures the phenomenal fireworks festival at Sumidagawa, Tokyo, showcasing the beauty and tradition of Japan. The Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival (Tokyo) is said to have begun in 1733, when Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune held a water god festival at the foot of Ryogoku Bridge and launched fireworks to commemorate those who had died from famine and cholera. It was temporarily suspended during the Meiji Restoration and World War II. In 1978, the festival was renamed the "Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival." Since then, it has been held at the end of July each year, becoming one of the most popular fireworks festivals in Tokyo. Attracting nearly one million visitors annually, it is also broadcast live on television.
