Rozanji Temple was built in the year 938 on a hill called Funaokayama situated on the northern outskirts of Kyoto by the priest Ganzan Daishi. It is one of the four temples that had an Okurodo (a private Buddhist chapel of the imperial family originally located in the Imperial Palace). These temples belonged directly to the Imperial Court as does Rozanji today. The moss and gravel garden at Rozan-ji temple is planted with bellflowers.

The charming woodblock print "Niwa tazumi" (Heavy Rainfall) is by Katsuyuki Nishijima. First printed in 1998. Please note this is a small size print paper height is 6 inches and the width is 8 inches. Wonderful details with strong colors. Excellent shading, bold colors, and strong ink bleed-through. Nishijima uses old words as a title, which people are not used to using in their daily lives recently. Sometimes I ask Nishijima directly. I think he wants to put Japanese spirits or cultures which have been forgotten into his art. Nishijima's umbrella prints are very attractive and popular.
