The exquisite print 'Tokonatsu' (Everlasting Summer) from 'The Tale of Genji' is by Kaoru Saito. "Tokonatsu" is one of the chapter titles of "The Tale of Genji," a classic Japanese novel consisting of fifty-four chapters. The chapter title is inspired by a waka poem in which Genji composed verses about the everlasting summer flowers (Nadeshiko). Genji compares the delicate and beautiful Tamakazura to the Nadeshiko flower. The pattern on the cloth she is sleeping on is also adorned with a Nadeshiko flower motif, adding to her allure. It's about the life of Hikaru Genji, son of the emperor, and also about the aristocratic society of that period.
The story behind "Kagaribi"(Bonfire): Genji, as the night grew late and he was about to leave, lit the fading bonfire in the garden and expressed his current feelings to Lady Tamakazura through a waka poem 'The smoke of my love, which accompanies the bonfire, is the eternal flame in my heart that will never fade.' It is a lovely print that beautifully depicts Genji's feelings.

The wonderful black and white woodblock print "Kisshōten" (The Goddess of Beauty, Fortune, and Prosperity) is by Kihei Sasajima (1906-1993). Printed on very thin washi paper. Unique texture with heavy embossing by the Takuzuri technique. This technique involves spraying a mist onto paper to give it moisture and transferring the designs of the protruding sections by pressing against them forcefully. His Takuzuri prints are really powerful with his own technique of relief printing.
Kihei Sasajima was born in 1906 in Tochigi prefecture. His artworks were influenced by his teacher Shiko Munakata and Unichi Hiratsuka. He dedicated his life to black and white woodblock prints created in Takuzuri. His collectors are worldwide.

The breathtaking woodblock print "Seijaku" (Serenity) is by Kazuyuki Ohtsu. I spoke with Mr. Ohtsu about this print. Ohtsu told me that he used aged paper (Kiyoshi Saito era) for these newly released prints. These papers were carefully stored for a long time and he washed them once before printing. He likes the mellow impression this older paper gives. Also, he mentioned that this temple is the Meigetsu-in temple as well known as Ajisai (Hydrangeas) temple in Kamakura, Kanagawa prefecture. One of his favorite temples.

The stunning and rare woodblock print "Kuramae Kokugi-kan" (The Kuramae Sumo Arena) is by Junichiro Sekino. From Oku no hosomichi series. Kuramae Kokugi-kan was built by the Japan Sumo Association in Kuramae, Taito-ku, Tokyo. Even though it is a heavy snowy day, many audiences and sumo wrestlers are around there. This print captured the lively scene in those days very well. Artist's red seal "Seki" on the lower right corner of the image. Wonderful woodblock print "Shōjō " from Noh Play is by Hideki Hanabusa (1913 -2001) Hanabusa is well known as a "Noh-ga" artist (Japanese painting artist who specializes Noh related subjects). Shoujou from Noh Play
Shōjō (猩々, heavy drinker or orangutan) is a kind of Japanese sea spirit with a red face and hair and a fondness for alcohol. The legend is the subject of a Noh play of the same name. There is a Noh mask for this character, as well as a type of Kabuki stage makeup. Unique Japanese woodblock print, Sumo wrestler portrait "Chiyonofuji Mitsugu" is by Motoki Matsubayashi (b. 1948). Title "Chiyonofuji Mitsugu" (Sumo Wrestler's name) on the lower right corner of the image. Artist signature "Motoki" on the lower left corner of the image. Limited edition size of 100. Motoki Matsubayashi is well known Modern Sumo artist and illustrator (mostly his subjects are Sumo wrestlers or Rakugo artists).
Chiyonofuji was the 58th Yokozuna (most highest rank). He was one of the greatest yokozuna of recent times. He was particularly remarkable for his longevity in sumo's top rank. Promoted at the age of twenty-six after winning his second championship, his performance improved with age, winning more tournaments in his thirties than any other wrestler and dominating the sport in the second half of the 1980s. Rectangular embossed seal "紫浪 刻.刷" (carved&printed by Shiro) on the lower right margin. Beautifully embossed. It is extremely hard to find Kasamatsu’s self-published print nowadays.
