- Neko to Yuki (Cat and Snow) -

The delightful woodblock print "Neko to Yuki" (Cat and Snow) by Gashu Fukami (1953–2023) depicts a cheerful black cat standing contentedly amid gently falling snow. Rendered in the artist's signature bold and simplified style, the cat's playful expression and charming silhouette are full of warmth and personality. 

The rhythmic pattern of white and blue dots suggests gently falling snow, while the smoky blue background enhances the quiet charm of the scene. The artist's bold, simplified forms create a composition that is both playful and distinctly modern.

The print is numbered 27/50, hand-signed in pencil in the lower right margin, and titled in Japanese in the center of the lower margin. The artist's distinctive vertical "Gashū" signature, rendered in silver leaf in the lower right corner of the image, serves as an elegant decorative accent.

Gashu Fukami (1953–2023), born in Kumamoto Prefecture, was a Japanese woodblock print artist celebrated for his simple yet expressive style. After graduating from Doshisha University in 1976, he was inspired by renowned printmakers Umetaro Azechi and Takeji Asano to pursue woodblock printmaking. He later studied art in Boston before establishing studios in Kyoto, Nagasaki, and Fukuoka. His prints often portray familiar subjects—including cats, birds, flowers, and rural landscapes—with warmth, humor, and quiet charm.
