- Yuga (Quiet Splendor) -

The elegant large-format lithograph Yuga by Kyosuke TChinai presents a young woman in profile surrounded by overlapping folding fans. Her softly rendered face and patterned kimono contrast with the richly colored fans, decorated with flowers and intricate traditional motifs. The balance between her quiet expression and the elaborate patterns gives the composition an intimate, dreamlike atmosphere. This is one of Chinai’s popular prints.

Drawing on traditional Japanese costume and decorative design, Chinai creates a distinctive portrait filled with poetic elegance. The muted tones of the figure bring a sense of stillness to the colorful composition, inviting a closer look at its finely detailed forms. The work is printed on ivory-colored paper, enhancing its warmth and timeless presence.

Technique: Lithograph
Paper size: 23 1/2 × 17 1/2 inches (59.5 × 44.5 cm)
Image size: 18 3/4 × 12 1/2 inches (48 × 32 cm)
Edition: H.C. (Hors de Commerce), a proof outside the numbered edition of 88
Date: 1988
Signed: Hand-signed by the artist in the lower margin
Condition: Overall in good condition. There is a tiny, faint ink stain near the right edge of the lower margin and a tiny ink spot in the lower-left margin. The upper-left margin has a paper scuff, possibly from an attempt to erase an ink smudge, along with faint ink smudging. Very minor handling creases are also present in the margins. These imperfections would be matted out. The image area is in excellent condition.

What may appear as a faint spot in the darker ivory-toned background beside the black area at the upper right is neither an age spot nor foxing. The tonal border that may resemble a mat line is part of the original printing, rather than mat burn or fading.
