Gyoshu Hayami (1894-1935) was a Nihonga (Japanese painting) artist. He died quite young. He left many masterpieces in his short life, and "Meiju Chiri Tsubaki"(Camellia Petals Scattering) was first designated as an important cultural artwork in the Showa period.

This heartwarming woodblock print, "Children and Summer Festival" is by Hitoshi Kiyohara (1896-1956). Printed in Showa 30 nen (1955). This print shows the Japanese game "Kingyo - Sukui" in summer. "Kingyo - Sukui" (Goldfish scooping) is a traditional Japanese game in which a player scoops goldfish with a special scooper with very thin Japanese washi paper. It is easy to break when it gets wet. It is a very hard game. Japanese summer festivals commonly have a stall for this activity. Both children and adults enjoy the game. This game started in the late Edo period, around 1810. Today it is so popular that stalls can be found at many "summer festivals" in Japan.

The wonderful woodblock print "Daisen Kokuritsu Koen” (Daisen National Park) is by Hideo Nishiyama (1911-1989). This print shows Mount Daisen in the winter. Printer: Shinmi, Carver: Okura, and Unsodo publisher seal on the left margin. Title "Daisen Kokuritsu Koen" (Daisen National Park), Artist's name "Nishiyama Hideo saku" and dated "Showa 35 nen" (1960) in Japanese on the right margin. "Gei" watermark on the upper left margin corner. Very different and unique style of woodblock print. Hard to find these old original first edition prints nowadays. I noticed that this print looks much more amazing from a little bit of distance.
Hideo Nishiyama (1911 - 1989) was born in Kyoto. He was a well-known (Nihon-ga) Japanese painting artist in Japan. Unsodo published "The Woodblock Prints -National Parks Series" by Hideo Nishiyama and Kaii Higashiyama in 1960.
Daisen National Park
Daisen National Park is a national park in the Chūgoku region, Honshū, Japan, and spans the prefectures of Okayama, Shimane, and Tottori. Mount Daisen is the focus of the park, which also includes the volcanic mountains and plains of Hiruzen, Mount Kenashi, Mount Sanbe, and Mount Hōbutsu. "Shiba Benten Ike" (Pond at Shiba Benten) is by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957). Excellent shading throughout with light embossing to the lotus leaves and women on the footbridge. First printed in 1929 originally by Kawaguchi & Sakai; this is a later printing by Shobisha from original blocks. Shobisha obtained the original blocks in about 1950. Signed Kawase Hasui with red artist seal "sui". The bottom margin contains the title "Shiba Benten Ike"(Pond at Shiba Benten) and "Showa 4 nen 8 gatsu saku"(printed in August 1929) in Japanese. The amazing woodblock print "Murō-ji" (Murō-ji Temple in Spring, Nara) is by Masao Ido. Peaceful spring image of Murō-ji Temple in Nara. Here is a very spiritual place with wonderful nature. The air is always cool and refreshing. This is one of my favorite temples in Nara. Flying pink petals in the wind creates a very soft and beautiful atmosphere.
Murō-ji Temple is a Buddhist temple belonging to the Shingon school, located in the city of Uda, Nara Prefecture. Its five-storied pagoda is one of the oldest standing pagodas in Japan, dating its construction to the 9th century. (Source: Wikipedia)

"Akafuku" (Sweet shop Akafuku) is by Katsuyuki Nishijima. Printed in 2004. This store is a very famous sweet shop "Akafuku" in Ise, Mie Prefecture. The wooden sign says "Akafuku", established in Hoei 4nen (since 1707). This is typical of Nishijima's style. Very bold and strong impression with beautiful contrast.

The exceptional woodblock print "Himawari"(Sunflower - Van Gogh) is by Gihachiro Okuyama (1907-1981). A very powerful and beautiful art piece. The original artist's name "Van Gogh", the title "Himawari", Numbered "91-67", Pencil-signed "Gihachiro Okuyama", and dated "1960" on the bottom margin. Dated "Showa 35 nen 7 gatsu 17 nichi" (1960, July 17th) and "Okuyama Gihachiro jizuri"(Printed by Gihachiro Okuyama), and small red seal "Hori, Gijin"(Carved by Gijin Okuyama) on the left margin. Gihachiro Okuyama produced wonderful woodblock print series of famous European paintings. This print is one of them. They are highly collectible prints and are hard to find nowadays. This Sunflower is very popular and extremely hard to find.

The elegant woodblock print "Kosen-hakuha" (Crimson Petal - White Petal) is by Toshikata Mizuno (1866-1908). This elegant larger re-carved edition of the original Kuchi-e was first published by Bungei Kurabu. Bungei Kurabu was a very popular literary magazine in the Meiji era. This re-carved edition was published by Soudosha from a limited edition series of only 980 sheets on October 1st, 1977. Signed "Toshikata" with artist seals on the lower left.
Toshikata Mizuno studied the art of woodblock making with Taiso Yoshitoshi. His superb talent expressed his subjects with subtle feelings and the dramatic environments in the most natural and elegant ways. This is one of Toshikata's more popular and recognized works.

The fine woodblock print "Kingyo uri" (Goldfish Vendor) is by Tomikichiro Tokuriki. This print shows a scene of a goldfish vendor at a summer festival in Japan. "Ranchu no ko 1 piki 10 yen" (Baby of Ranchu, 10 yen each) on the sign. Ranchu is a fancy goldfish. The children are so excited, on the other hand, the vendor is very collected.
