The stunning woodblock print “NANZENJI – SHOINAN” is by Clifton Karhu. The print captures a breathtaking autumn view at Nanzen-ji Temple in Kyoto.
While strolling through the Nanzen-ji area, one encounters numerous small sub-temples nestled among the historic grounds. Among them is Shoin-an, a private sub-temple of Nanzen-ji established at its present location around 1910. Because it is not open to the public, Shoin-an remains a relatively little-known temple despite being situated within one of Kyoto’s most celebrated temple districts.
The Nanzen-ji area attracts countless visitors, particularly during the autumn foliage season, when brilliant crimson and golden leaves heighten the dramatic beauty of the historic temple complex and the picturesque rows of surrounding sub-temples. In this work, Karhu masterfully conveys the richness and atmosphere of Kyoto in autumn through his characteristic bold composition, striking contrasts, and deeply expressive use of color.
Dated, signed, titled, and numbered by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. With its vivid palette and powerful sense of atmosphere, this work is an absolutely breathtaking celebration of autumn in Kyoto.
