The beautiful woodblock print Naniwaya Okita (Okita of the Naniwa-ya Teahouse) is by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806). It portrays Okita, a waitress at the Naniwa-ya, a teahouse located near the Niōmon Gate within the grounds of Sensō-ji. Okita was renowned for her beauty and was one of Utamaro’s favorite subjects; he created a great number of works depicting her.

A short comic poem called kyōka is inscribed in the upper left of the image:
“(Resting at the Naniwaya teahouse) There is not a single person who will not stop to admire the beautiful Okita of the Naniwaya,” by Katsura no Mayuzumi.

Originally printed during the Edo period, this is a recarved edition from the late Shōwa era (1980–1990). The publisher is Yuyudo; however, this print is part of Utamaro’s ukiyo-e collection issued as “not for sale.” This woodblock print features high-quality colors and intricate details. Please take a moment to appreciate the superb craftsmanship and fine detail, including the beautiful shimmering mica in the background.
