The superb woodblock print “Matsushima” (Sunset at Matsushima Bay) is by Masao Ido. The print depicts a stunning sunset view of Matsushima Bay in Miyagi Prefecture. Matsushima is celebrated as one of the Three Views of Japan.

The scene captures a tranquil, almost ethereal landscape, bathed in the warm light of the setting sun. The sea shimmers in the golden glow, while the islands stretch across the horizon in deep, verdant hues. With masterful technique, this piece beautifully renders the breathtaking reflection of the sunset upon the water’s surface—a truly mesmerizing image.
