The exquisite woodblock print 'Zoku ni iu Gutarabei' (“A So-Called Idle Girl”) is by the master Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806), from the series 'Kyōkun Oya no Megane' (“A Parent’s Moralizing Spectacles”).
The print depicts a young woman—resembling a town girl—whose attire is reasonably tidy, yet whose posture and expression convey an unmistakable air of slovenliness and listlessness. A didactic inscription appears in the upper section of the image. While executed in the refined aesthetic style of bijin-ga, the series is distinguished by its underlying message: a humorous form of satire conveying the idea, “This is how you should NOT be.”
Originally produced during the Edo period, this is a recarved edition from the late Shōwa era (1980–1990), issued by the publisher Yuyudo. Part of Utamaro’s ukiyo-e collection marked “not for sale,” this print showcases exceptional color, exquisite line work, and meticulous craftsmanship. It presents a rare opportunity to appreciate the timeless elegance and artistry of Utamaro’s vision.
