The elegant small-format woodblock print “Fuyō - Shimotsuki” (Cotton Rose – November), from the series Twelve Aspects of Flowers, is by Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902–2000). Printed in 1978, the composition features the Japanese title in the upper left, while the artist’s signature and red seal, both reading “Tomi,” appear in the lower left.

This beautiful work features a large cotton rose blossom that fills the entire composition, its pure white petals standing out vividly against a deep indigo background. With its soft and graceful form, the cotton rose is a flower deeply familiar to people in Japan. Yet because each bloom lasts only a single day before fading, it has long been associated with transience and fleeting beauty, themes that frequently appear in Japanese literature and the arts.
