The remarkable print "Azumaya” (The Eastern Cottage) from The Tale of Genji is by Kaoru Saito. The Tale of Genji is a renowned work of Japanese literature written by Murasaki Shikibu in the early 11th century during the Heian period. The novel depicts the life of Hikaru Genji, the son of an emperor, and offers an intimate portrayal of the aristocratic society of the time.
Behind the Story Depicted in This Image
The term “Azumaya” signifies a “rustic dwelling in the style of the Eastern Provinces,” or simply a humble country retreat. It refers to the temporary refuge where Ukifune, pursued relentlessly by Niou, was taken by her mother to hide. Upon learning of her whereabouts in this modest dwelling in Sanjō, Kaoru set out to see her.
One rainy evening, long after twilight had faded, a visitor knocked softly at the gate. Carried on the cold wind, a delicate fragrance drifted through the air. Sensing it was Kaoru, Ukifune opened the door, and the two passed the night together. By morning, Kaoru placed her in his carriage and gently conveyed her to Uji.
In this print, Kaoru Saito depicts a small cottage nestled quietly in the brush, rendered in subdued, neutral tones. The composition is imbued with a tranquil stillness, as though time itself lingers in a suspended, contemplative moment.
