The small woodblock print A Shower at Arashiyama, a Mountain Resort in the West of the City, Kyoto is by Tobei Kamei (1901–1977). It depicts a serene rainy view of Kyoto’s landmark Togetsu-kyo Bridge in Arashiyama, evoking the quiet charm of old Kyoto. The image is very tasteful and atmospheric. The Japanese title, the artist’s signature, and the artist’s seal are printed on the left. The original card stock bears the English title.

The print is preserved and mounted on its original card stock, making it a wonderful collectible for admirers of Kyoto’s iconic places.

Kamei Tobei (1901–1977), whose real name was Eiichi, later changed his given name from Tobei to Genbei. He was born in Wakayama Prefecture in 1901. Tobei moved to Kyoto in 1919, studied under Kosai Yamada, and graduated from Kyoto Painting College in 1932. He exhibited his work at the Teiten and Shunyo-kai exhibitions, and is best known for his evocative landscapes of Kyoto.
